Network fares
Network Fares are charged on our bus services that operate outside of Ipswich, to and from destinations outside of the Town Fares Zone.
The single and return fares charged on services that operate outside of Ipswich are not the same as those that operate in the Town Fares Zone, as fares are charged based on the distance you travel (i.e. you are charged a lower fare for a shorter distance, and a higher fare for a longer distance).
Network Day tickets & Network Period Products allow the user unlimited travel on our entire network of services including those operating inside the Town Fares Zone.
If you are under 20 years old you, you can take advantage of discounted bus fares. The price you pay depends on which ticket or product you wish to purchase. The discounted prices can be seen in the tables at the top of the page (by clicking the U20 tab).
If you are aged between 16-19 to access the discounted U20 fares, you will need to carry an Ipswich Buses ID Card or an Endeavour Card to present to the driver if you are asked.
Ipswich Buses ID cards only cost £2.00 and can be purchased from our Travel Shop at Tower Ramparts Bus Station. You will need to fill out a brief form and provide us with a passport-sized photo and a document that shows your date of birth (e.g. passport, driving license, birth certificate). The Ipswich Buses ID Card will be issued to you immediately and won’t ‘expire’ until your 20th birthday. It does not need to be renewed once purchased.
If you are unable to present either an Ipswich Buses ID Card or an Endeavour Card when asked, you may be charged the full ‘Adult’ fare.
There are a number of ways you can pay for your journey:
Cash – There is nothing quite like a classic! We continue to accept cash payments on all our services. If you are using cash, we ask that you pay the exact fare, as we operate a farebox system and do not give change.
Contactless – You can use your contactless bank card to pay for your journey, as well as using Apple Pay and Android Pay on your smartphone or smartwatch.
App – Our mobile app guarantees the best value period fares for regular travellers. The app also gives you the peace of mind of being able to track the location of our buses. More information can be found in the ‘App’ section or on our dedicated ‘App’ page. You can find this and download our app by clicking Our App. The app is also available to download through the App Store or Google Play.
Smartcard – if you travel with us regularly period tickets can be purchased and loaded onto a Smartcard. You simply purchase the period ticket you require and tap the card on the reader when you get on the bus. It’s that simple! When your period product expires, you can top up the card on our buses or in our Travel Shop at Tower Ramparts. More information can be found in the ‘Smartcard Info’ section below.
The Ipswich Buses Smartcard is a bank card-sized card that will fit into your wallet, purse or pocket that you can use to travel on any of our services.
If you travel with us regularly, period tickets can be purchased and loaded onto a Smartcard. When your period ticket expires, or the journeys you have loaded onto the Smartcard run out, you can top-up your Smartcard on our buses or in our Travel Shop at Tower Ramparts.
As well as loading 7-day, 28-day, 6 monthly or annual tickets onto a Smartcard, you can also buy 10, 20, 30, 40 or 50 journeys that will sit on your Smartcard until they are used. This ensures you can unlock discounted fares even if you don’t need to use our services daily.
All you need to do when using a Smartcard is tap it on the card reader on each bus when you board. It really is as simple as that.
You can get your Smartcard from our Travel shop in Tower Ramparts Bus Station.
If you lose your Smartcard, don’t worry, we can replace it for a small charge of £3.00.
The Ipswich Buses mobile app allows you to purchase and validate bus tickets on Ipswich Bus vehicles. You will then receive a QR code which you will need to scan when boarding – no more searching for cash!
You can also search for particular stops, see real time bus information, receive realtime service alerts and view scheduled departure times for your route.
The App is available to download through the Google Play and App Store
For train travellers who wish to make onward journeys on our services in and around Ipswich visit the PLUSBUS website for further details.
In Ipswich for a small additional payment on your train ticket of £3 for adults and £1.50 for young travellers you can travel across all our Ipswich Town network.
Just show the driver your train ticket marked PLUSBUS.
There is no charge for any of our services for guide dogs, hearing dogs for the deaf and accessibility dogs.
There is also no charge for other well-behaved dogs and pets on any of our services. All we ask is that dogs are kept on a lead, with smaller animals contained and travelling on your lap.
